WHY DIGITAL RESTORATION?

A great many old paintings exhibit damage and decay in one form or another - blistering, flaking, cracking, abrasions, surface or embedded dirt and dulled varnish to name a few. Craquelure resembles a mosaic resulting from dried paint and is painstaking to properly rectify even digitally. Because paintings comprise elements that are often incompatible, each has a different reaction to temperature, humidity and light. When new the artwork has some elasticity to cope with changes, but as years pass this diminishes and stresses may become apparent.

The Scenica range of prints has been digitally restored to their former glory, rendered clearly in their proper colours and correctly contrasted. Unfortunately the majority of commercial prints exhibit colour saturation, dark tones, high contrast levels or are washed out (or any combination of these) and consequently the products bear poor resemblance to the originals the artists created.

In the case of our Tudor range the usual flaked backgrounds have been replaced in their entirety, either plain with subtle back-lighting added or uniquely enhanced with period backdrops. Several images are unique to Scenica, having been diligently coloured from woodcuts or line drawings.

A long-standing keen interest in Pre-Raphaelite art developed into a large collection of digitally restored works that removed various age-related damage and flaws. Later this included Tudor portraiture.
